A binding with a beautiful spine

A complete guide to Coptic stitch binding — the technique that opens flat and turns the spine into a feature.

Dear friend,

Some bindings do their best work by disappearing. Coptic stitch is the opposite — the spine is exposed, the braid runs along the outside where you can see and touch it, and that's not incidental. It's the design.

If you've ever wanted a book that opens completely flat — no pressing the pages down, no losing your place mid-spread — this is the binding that makes that possible. It's one of those techniques that sounds involved when you read about it, but once you're holding needle and thread and you feel the first loop click into place, the logic starts to make sense in your hands rather than your head.

I filmed the whole process twice in this tutorial: once at a slower demonstration pace, and again at working speed with a curved needle, so you can see both how it should look and how it actually goes. There's a downloadable instruction sheet linked in the description too, for when you're mid-binding and just need a quick reminder of which direction the loop goes.

If you'd like to make one of your own, here's the whole thing — start to finish.

What you'll make

What you'll need

Tighten until you feel the thread stop — and then stop tightening.

That one small instinct — knowing when to stop — is what keeps the spine looking clean and the book lying flat the way it should. Once you have a Coptic-bound book in your hands, it's hard not to want to make another. The stitch scales to any size, and it pairs beautifully with everything you've already put into your covers and papers. I hope this one finds its way onto your making list.
